In a turbulent summer, one of the few peaks has been the news that Lionel Messi has agreed a new contract. However, it was recently revealed that he has not yet put pen to paper on the agreement.
With his existing deal set to expire next summer, it’s hugely important that he does so imminently or Barcelona risk losing him for free as he is able to enter into negotiations with other clubs from January.
Guillem Balague claims that there is no doubting that Messi will sign the contract and is adamant that the Argentine superstar will not go back on his word. Even so, he is waiting for the right time to do so.
The forward is reluctant to do so currently given the ongoing battle between the club’s board, heavily criticised from all corners, and the players. He feels that to sign a new deal would indicate a seal of approval of the Josep María Bartomeu regime and would only be used as propaganda against his critics.
After the club recently publicly stated their intention to take Neymar to court for breach of contract, Messi was one of several players to post a picture on Instagram of himself with the Brazilian, seemingly in a gesture of support.
It’s clear that relations between players and club bosses are not good, but if that leads to losing their star man on a free transfer it would be catastrophic for the club and would surely force the resignation of Bartomeu, perhaps a thought in the back of Messi’s mind.
