A solitary goal from striker Aritz Aduriz in the 38th minute was enough to give Athletic Club the three points against local neighbours Eibar.
The first half was a battle for the most part but seven minutes before half time a lucky clearance fell to Inaki Williams whose cross was bulleted home by Aritz Aduriz, despite Marko Dmitrovic’s best attempts to keep it out. This would send the visitors towards all three points as it was the only goal of the game.
Athletic sat back more in the second half with the introduction of Eibar substitute Bébé causing all sorts of problems for the visiting defence and in particular Eneko Boveda. The wideman set up a few chances and had a couple of his own but the hosts were unable to find a way past a spirited Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Athletic goal with the young keeper showing just why he is so highly regarded.
The home side were reduced to ten men in the dying minutes when Joan Jordan picked up a second yellow card for a tug on Iker Muniain meaning that he will miss Eibar’s next game after the international break against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Athletic go into the break on four points and are back at San Mames next time out when they will face newly promoted Girona.
