Player Of The Week – Jornada 2

The results are in from our second La Liga player of the week poll here at La Liga News UK and the winner is Barcelona’s Leo Messi.

Our talented group of writers reflected back on the weekend’s performances and chose our four contenders for the award, consisting of Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Koké (Atlético Madrid), Andres Guardado (Real Betis) and Marco Asensio (Real Madrid) – before allowing you – the readers to cast your votes.

4th -Andres Guardado – 2%

The experienced Mexican playmaker had a fantastic game on Friday night in Betis’s 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo at the Benito Villamarin.

He bagged an assist for both of his side’s goals and was a constant thorn in the side of the visitors from Vigo causing them problems all night with his passing and inch perfect deliveries.

He also made four key passes and had a pass accuracy of 89% as well as having 54 touches of the ball meaning that he was voted as man of the match.

It must also be stated that his percentage of votes in the poll in no way reflect badly upon what was a terrific performance.

3rd – Koké – 5%

Atlético’s Spanish midfield maestro Koké came in third place in the poll with a low percentage of just 5% but he was still one of the standout performers of Jornada 2 in La Liga.

He helped Atléti to all 3 points away to Las Palmas in their 5-1 win by scoring two of the goals. His first coming from the edge of the box when he picked up the ball before bending it into the far corner of the net.

His second and Atlético’s fourth was equally as impressive. Angel Correa’s shot deflecting up into the air allowing Koké to slam an overhead kick into the back of the net.

As well as his two goals he also grabbed himself an assist and had a passing accuracy of 81%, beaten only by Saul and Thomas Partey.

2nd – Marco Asensio – 20%

Coming in at second place is Real Madrid starlet Marco Asensio. The youngster certainly has one of the brightest futures in the world of football and his performance in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Valencia showed exactly why.

He gave Madrid the lead after less than ten minutes firing the ball into the bottom left corner from 20 yards out.

Asensio was also the one who salvaged a point for his side late on in the game, bending the ball around the wall and into Neto’s goal from a free kick. The goal was just a glimpse of what the 21 year old can do and with performances like this one he will no doubt continue to light up the stadium he is playing in.

However he is not a one man team and likes to involves his teammates as his 90.5% passing accuracy shows although he was the standout player from this game.

1st – Lionel Messi – 73%

Despite the fact that there were so many outstanding performers this week, your votes meant that the winner of our poll was of course Barcelona magician Lionel Messi. So much so in fact that he received an enormous 73% of the votes comprehensively beating the nearest challenger by 53%.

His performance in Saturday’s 2-0 win at the Mendizorrotza against Alaves was enough to gain him the award as he showed just why many regard him as the number one player in the world.

He scored both goals for the Blaugrana and had a rating of over 9 out of 10 according to most journalists and statisticians.

His first goal took a slight deflection off of one of the defenders before finding the net but it will definitely go down as Messi’s goal with his second goal showing his true predatory instinct as he capitalised on a defensive mistake to drill the ball home.

He did also miss a penalty but even the best make mistakes and this week he was classed as the best according to you, our readers.

With the international break coming up there will be no Player of the Week poll next week but stay with us here at La Liga News UK where we will continue to have news and views on all things Spanish football throughout the break.
