Atletico Madrid are set to finalise a deal for Lautaro Martinez, Racing Club president Victor Blanco has confirmed.
Whilst the transfer window is closed and Diego Simeone’s side have a transfer ban until January – their interest in Argentine U20 international Martinez has continued to develop in recent weeks.
Having missed out on Diego Costa from Chelsea this summer after being told by FIFA that signing players would not be a possibility – Simeone is keen to explore a number of future deals and that includes Martinez.
It is understood that the Spanish capital side have met his €9m release clause in his contract, but also added an extra fee on top as a commitment to signing the talented forward.
“Next week Atletico are coming to Argentina to finalise the deal,” the Racing Club Victor Blanco president told TyC Sports.
“We are optimistic that Martinez will stay here for one more year, but let’s see how it can be a good deal for Lautaro and both clubs.”
It is expected that Martinez will remain with Racing Club until next summer, whilst some reports claim he could arrive in La Liga in January.
Martinez has had a remarkable breakthrough in Argentine football, breaking into the club’s first team last season, scoring nine goals in 23 appearances.
Meanwhile, Atletico officials have told former striker Diego Costa to return to Chelsea and begin training after going AWOL since the season finished in May.
A deal for the Spanish international to return to the club is still being discussed but Atleti want him to train through to January, before a move could happen.
