Real Madrid got their Champions League defence off to a winning start with a comfortable 3-0 win over APOEL.
Cristiano Ronaldo goals either side of half time got Madrid on their way before Sergio Ramos grabbed the third in what was a straight forward win for the European champions.
Madrid made much of the early running as expected but the first shot on target of the game came from the visitors. Roberto Lago picked up the ball from a short free kick and hit a shot from distance but Keylor Navas watched it all the way and tipped it over the bar.
Two minutes later Madrid took the lead. Isco carried the ball into the APOEL half before releasing Gareth Bale down the left wing. The Welshman played the ball across the face of the goal first time and Ronaldo was in position to fire it into the net to put Real ahead.
Real continued to dominate the game but were unable to get the second goal and the teams went in at the break with Madrid leading 1-0.
The second half continued as the first had ended and Ronaldo almost got his second of the game when Daniel Carvajal put an excellent cross into the six yard box. Ronaldo got away from his marker but his shot rebounded off the underside of the bar and back out. The Portuguese star was convinced it had crossed the line but the replay showed only half the ball had crossed the line and the referee had got the decision right.
Ronaldo wouldn’t have to wait long for another chance and he got his second five minutes later from the penalty spot. Lago was adjudged to have handled a Bale cross and Ronaldo shot low and into the corner to make it 2-0 to the home side.
Again Real pushed for more goals and were rewarded ten minutes later when Ramos started and finished a Real Madrid attack. He intercepted the ball in midfield before laying it off to Marcelo who carried it forward 30 yards down the left. The Brazilian crossed the ball into the box and Ronaldo met it with his head but it looped up off an APOEL defender and Ramos acrobatically met it to score an overhead kick.
Madrid had chances to score more goals but were unable to find the net and in the end cruised to the 3-0 win. Things will get tougher for Real in this group as they travel to Germany to take on Borussia Dortmund next. Dortmund lost 3-1 to Tottenham in their opening game and will be desperate for points when Madrid come to town. For APOEL their attention will now turn to a home game against Tottenham as they look to get their European campaign back on track.
