Real Sociedad captain Xabi Prieto has discussed his side’s chances of winning the Europa League title this season and said it would be a ‘dream’.
The 34-year-old is busy preparing for Thursday night’s Group L opener with Rosenborg, having helped his side to three out of three La Liga wins this season so far, seeing them level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table.
Prieto, who passed 500 competitive games for La Real earlier this season has spoken about his side’s upcoming campaign in the Europa League, saying their dream this season is to win the competition.
“Our dream is to win the Europa League,” Prieto told Marca.
“We want to demonstrate in Europe how strong a side we are and what we are capable of, that we can compete against anyone.
“We have to work hard from the first match to achieve these dreams and ambitions but yes, I believe this is possible.
Spanish sides in the Europa League have won four out of the last six finals with Sevilla winning the title three times and Atletico Madrid sealing one honour – and Prieto will be hoping his side can produce a similar performance to capture to the trophy.
“It is crucial to get off to a winning start as the teams at this level are well-matched and every match counts in European groups of this nature.
“Rosenborg? They are one of the great clubs of their country who are accustomed to continued success so will be complicated.”
Sociedad’s captain then asked the fans to be in full support on Thursday evening, similar to their presence against Villarreal earlier this season.
“We hope the Anoeta will be full as it was against Villarreal, our fans can push on to another victory.”
Elsewhere, Villarreal are in action on Thursday as they face Astana at home, and Athletic Bilbao travel to Germany as they face Hertha Berlin.
