Former Barcelona presidential candidate Augusti Benedito has said current president Josep Maria Bartomeu is just ‘a month and a half’ away from resigning.
A summer of discontent for Barca fans saw new boss Ernesto Valverde bring in just four new signings – Paulinho, Gerard Deulofeu, Ousmane Dembele and Nelson Semedo.
Fans of the club plus former players such as Xavi Hernandez have called on a change to be made behind the scenes, claiming current president Bartomeu has ignored the famed La Masia academy by loaning such players as Sergi Samper out and failed to bring in ‘Barca-like’ players.
Catalan media such as Sport now claim that thousands of fans signed a vote of no confidence at the weekend as Barca comfortably beat rivals Espanyol 5-0.
16,560 signatures were needed to spark a change, although more are expected after it is thought just over 3,000 were collected as former presidential candidate Benedito collected more before the 3-0 Champions League win over Juventus on Tuesday evening.
And, he now believes that the pressure mounting on Bartomeu is getting too much.
“It is 40 percent of what we require,” Benedito is quoted as saying by Marca.
“When we have all of our machinery working at full capacity, we should get at least 400 signatures a day.
“I have no doubt that on October 2 they will accept the 18,000 or 19,000 signatures we present, although they are changing the criteria as it suits them.”
One of those signatures was former president Joan Laporta, who has been particularly vocal in his displeasure of the club’s handling under Bartomeu.
Laporta – club president between 2003 and 2010, tweeted: “As a socio, I am the 15,142nd person to sign the #VotodeCensura2017.”
On the field, Barca have had a remarkable start to the new season, winning three out of three La Liga games and beating Juventus on Tuesday.
