Sevilla produced a solid performance against resilient Girona to move into second place with a 1-0 victory.
Luis Muriel scored his first goal for the Andalusians as they came away from Girona with an important three points which points them hot on the heels of league leaders Barcelona.
The Colombian international drove a left footed effort past keeper Gorka Iraizoz with twenty minutes remaining to send the few travelling fans away happy.
The victory means Eduardo Berizzo has kept Sevilla undefeated to start the season in all competitions, putting them above the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the league standings.
Elsewhere, Alaves were beaten 3-0 at home by Villarreal thanks to goals from Cedric Bakambu and Carlos Bacca in a result which saw Luis Zubeldia lose his job at the club.
Zubeldia brought in the likes of Munir El Haddadi and Bojan Krkic this summer but no goals in their first four La Liga games have seen them sit rock bottom in the league.
For Villarreal, it is now two wins in two games thanks to a brace from Bakambu and one from Colombian forward Bacca.
In the other action this weekend, Barcelona beat Getafe to make it four wins out of four games.
