Griezmann delighted with first Wanda Metropolitano goalSeptember 18, 2017
Antoine Griezmann has revealed his delight at scoring the first goal at Atletico Madrid’s new home – Wanda Metropolitano.
Just under 65,000 people, including King Felipe VI – packed into Atleti’s new home but the game in truth was an anticlimax as the home side failed to break down Michel’s visitors.
As expected, the hosts did dominate possession, but Malaga’s organisation in midfield proved hard to force a way past and create chances.
The visitors did have the best chance of the first half as Borja Baston wriggled himself into space, forcing Jan Oblak into a good save.
And, the Atleti keeper was quick to follow up the rebound as Recio almost netted.
Atletico head coach Diego Simeone responded in the second half, throwing on Yannick Carrasco to inject some attacking thrust into his side which seemed somewhat overawed by the occasion.
This change paid off and Atleti were soon rewarded when Antoine Griezmann swept home the opener at the near post from a delightful right-wing cross from Correa.
And, the Frenchman has discussed his delight at scoring the first goal a the new stadium, calling it the ‘best’ he has ever played at.
“I’m very happy, firstly for the victory, which was important, and I’m also happy to have scored here. I wanted to and hopefully I’ll score many more,” he told reporters following the game.
“We really wanted to win, we already trained here on Thursday but something was missing – the 12th man.
“The truth is that, and I’m not just saying it because it’s mine, it’s the best stadium I’ve played at. I was really looking forward to playing in La Liga again and I’m working for the team and I’m very happy to do it again. I’m feeling better.
“We have to keep going like this. The team had won 5-1 at Las Palmas and played a good match last week. We’ll get better with every game.
“These are three very important points after playing three games away from home.”
The game ended up 1-0 to the hosts, with the three points putting them into the top three for the first time this season, whilst Malaga sit bottom of the table.
