Atletico Madrid made it 15 games unbeaten away from home as they beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
Goals from Angel Correa and Yannick Carrasco ensured Diego Simeone’s side kept up their impressive record on the road and moved them up to third in the La Liga standings.
The visitors enjoyed large amounts of the ball at the San Mames but they almost fell behind thanks to a dubious refereeing decision which saw Felipe Luis hauled up for a tackle which on further look – was outside the box.
Jan Oblak has been in superb form for Atleti in recent weeks and he stood strong to save Aritz Aduriz’s spot kick, providing some justice over the decision for Simeone’s men.
Second half strikes from Correa and substitute Carrasco put the visitors in front, with Antoine Griezmann providing a constant threat to the Athletic back-line.
The hosts did get themselves on the scoresheet through Raul Garcia, who scored in stoppage time, but the visitors held on for three important points.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid were beaten 1-0 at home by Real Betis thanks to a late goal by Antonio Sanabria and Sevilla managed to beat Las Palmas with Jesus Navas scoring the only game of the game in what was his 400th appearance for the club.
In Wednesday’s other La Liga game, Leganes and Girona played a 0-0 draw.
