Deportivo La Coruna won their first game of the season, beating rock bottom Alaves thanks to a goal from Luisinho.
Having sacked manager Luis Zubeldia last weekend, Alaves knew they had to start picking up points to move up the table – but facing Pep Mel’s side, they would find it hard to make that happen.
Mel’s side were also in a similar predicament, having failed to win so far this season but a goal on the stroke of half time from Luisinho gave the home side all three points.
The Portuguese defender saw his effort fly under Fernando Pacheco and it proved decisive in terms of the result at the Riazor.
The result sees Mel’s side move up just slightly, whilst Alaves are now in ‘big’ trouble and they face Real Madrid in Basque country this weekend.
Depor meanwhile, visit Espanyol in Sunday morning’s early kick-off.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid were beaten 1-0 at home by Real Betis thanks to a late goal by Antonio Sanabria and Sevilla managed to beat Las Palmas with Jesus Navas scoring the only game of the game in what was his 400th appearance for the club.
In Wednesday’s other La Liga game, Leganes and Girona played a 0-0 draw.
