Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde and defender Jordi Alba have both praised the club’s start to the season, following the 30 win over Girona on Saturday evening.

A Spanish SuperCopa defeat and a mixed summer of transfer business – left many Barca fans worried about their form and season but under former Athletic Club coach Valverde, they have now won six out of six games in the league.

The excellent form of Lionel Messi has helped, whilst Valverde has utilised his full squad, handing back-up players the chance against derby opponents Girona on Saturday evening.

Two own goals and a strike from Luis Suarez settled the tie and ensured the Catalan side sit top of La Liga on 18 out of 18 points.

Valverde has spoken about the game and said that his side did well under pressure, having seen both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid win earlier in the day.

“There was some pressure on us as both Madrid and Atletico had won,” he told reporters following the game.

“Still, we have managed to take the lead, playing with our heads above all, but also with our hearts. This team can play through any situation, when you win easily or when the game is gridlocked and everything becomes much more complicated.”

Further to Valverde’s post match comments, full-back Jordi Alba, whose deflected effort gave Barca the lead on Saturday – praised the coach for his management of the squad.

“All the players are responding to what the Coach’s asking us and everything’s going well, but it’s clear that there’s still a lot of the season left.

“Valverde? He’s managing the squad very well.

“Practically all of us are playing, some more and some less, but that’s normal. The truth is that we’re responding very well [to his methods].”

Barca face Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League this Wednesday evening, before hosting Las Palmas at the weekend, where they will be hoping to go into the October international break having secured seven league wins out of seven.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid managed to beat Alaves 2-1 and Atletico Madrid proved too tough for Sevilla, beating them 2-0 and leapfrogging in the La Liga standings.
