Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has called on his squad to push Barcelona for the title, having added both Vitolo and Diego Costa to their ranks.
A relatively good start to the domestic season for Atleti has seen them sit just behind league leaders Barcelona in second place with four wins and two draws from six games.
A trip to Leganes awaits Diego Simeone’s side this weekend, following the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday evening in the Champions League.
Whilst, the squad were bitterly disappointed with the defeat and their first at the new Wanda Metropolitano stadium; Cerezo has backed them to go on and push early leaders Barca for the La Liga title this season.
We must work to improve from last season’s performance, which was phenomenal but now we are even stronger, ” he told Spanish daily Marca.
A relatively quiet summer for the Madrid based side saw no arrivals due to their transfer ban from football’s governing body FIFA, but the signings of both Vitolo and Diego Costa, who will arrive in January – will add experience and quality.
“Now we know Diego Costa and Vitolo are arriving, we must aim to win the title.
“With these two great players, we will win a lot and especially from January onwards.”
Barcelona face Las Palmas at the Camp Nou this weekend, where they are expected to make it seven wins out of seven.
Whilst, other title favourites – Real Madrid, are sitting in sixth place after a poor start to the season, failing to win at the Bernabeu.
