Manchester City fans are salivating at the reports that the club is preparing a bid to poach Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona.
The Argentine superstar’s contract is up on June 30th next year, which would leave the door open for a free transfer.
However, reports are saying that City is poised to make an earlier move with a 400M euro bid. The record-breaking bid would keep the door open for a potential transfer in January.
The five-time Balon d’Or winner verbally agreed a new four-year contract extension with the Barcelona president Bartomeu over the summer.
However, talks have been dragging on for several months now. Gossip about Messi’s anger at the club’s inability to retain Neymar and the ability to train again with Pep Guardiola are fueling the rumours.
Guardiola is said to be pushing for the swoop as he would welcome the chance to coach Messi again. The two previously worked together at Barcelona when Guardiola was the coach from 2008-2012.
Although City definitely have the pockets to secure such an expensive deal, most sources say Messi is still happy at Barcelona and would not want to uproot his family.
The Barcelona president is confident a deal can be reached and insists “Everything is signed. There is no need to worry.” Bartomeu’s confiendence may be justified, as just a few days ago he was able to secure a new lifetime contract with Andrés Iniesta.
The midfielder will now stay with the blaugrana club until the end of his career.
