Depor’s Cartabia thriving in settled environmentOctober 9, 2017
Deportivo La Coruna have endured a mixed start to the season, finding themselves in 15th place in La Liga with two wins and a draw from their opening seven games but one man who really looks to be enjoying his football is right winger, Fede Cartabia.
Cartabia has scored two goals so far this season but his overall play has been outstanding and the Argentine finally looks to be settled and enjoying his football after some difficult years when he was either trying to make it at Valencia or being punted out on loan for a season.
Cartabia who is a native of Lionel Messi’s home city, Rosario in Argentina, first moved to Spain when he was 13 years old. He played for Valencia at various age groups before working his way up into the B team and eventually the first team were he made his debut in 2013. His best season with Los Che was undoubtedly 2013/14 when he made 25 league appearances and also featured in 12 Europa League games, scoring three and assisting twice as Valencia were beaten on away goals by eventual winners Sevilla in the last four.
Despite playing well in 2013/14 when Nuno Espirito Santo arrived in the summer of 2014 it seemed he didn’t rate the Argentine and he was loaned out to La Liga new boys, Cordoba. Cartabia was one of Cordoba’s better players and scored four goals and assisted on five but it wasn’t enough to keep Los Califas up and he was moved on to Deportivo for another years loan. Once again he performed to a reasonable standard and got three goals and three assists for the Galician side which led to Pako Ayesteran bringing him back to Valencia to start the 2016/17 season. Ayesteran didn’t last long and neither did Cartabia as he made just four La Liga appearances before being released from the club on a free transfer. Deportivo made the move to sign him but loaned him out to Portuguese club, Braga, where he scored three and assisted twice in eleven games with the club.
Depor coach, Pepe Mel had an opportunity to look at Cartabia in preseason and he looks to have been impressed by the 24 year old and his faith has been rewarded by some excellent displays as the player has started every La Liga game this season for Deportivo. There has always been a lot of potential with Cartabia but he has never really stayed in the same place long enough to show exactly what he is capable of but Depor fans will hope that now is the time for the player to settle down and make a big impression for Mel’s side as they look to move further clear from La Liga’s relegation zone and into mid table. The player has the talent to do just that and if he can continue as he has started then Deportivo will have found themselves another gem.
