RCD Espanyol are desperate to tie down their top goalscorer from last season, Gerard Moreno. He scored 13 goals and registered 4 assists as he missed only one game in 2017/18.
That form attracted summer interest from Villarreal, though they never made an official bid for their former player who they sold to the Catalan club in 2015.
His current contract is set to run until 2020, but Los Pericos are hoping to extend the deal until 2021 with a higher release clause to deter interest from their rivals.
With three goals from seven games so far this campaign, his form looks set to continue and some have even suggested the 25-year-old as a surprising contender for Spain’s 2018 World Cup squad with few out and out centre-forward available to Julen Lopetegui.
Espanyol may only have paid £1.5 million to sign Moreno just two years ago, but Quique Sanchez Flores clearly has no plans to allow a key player to depart any time soon.
Moreno will be the second player to enter into contract talks with the club as talks recently commenced with goalkeeper Pau Lopez, whose deal runs out at the end of the season.
Lopez was linked to Brighton in the summer after a loan spell at Tottenham last season, but now looks likely to extend his stay at his boyhood club.
