Athletic Bilbao’s Iker Muniain has undergone successful surgery on a torn knee ligament, which will keep him out for the remainder of the season.
The 24-year-old forward ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Zorya in the Europa League before the international break and now looks likely to miss the remainder of Athletic’s 2017.
Further tests were done by club doctors following his injury after the Spanish international was taken off on a stretcher during the Europa game at San Mames and they confirmed that the winger had suffered an problem similar to his injury two years ago against Sevilla.
Athletic’s defeat to Zorya on leaves them in trouble in the Europa League.
A goal from a corner by Igor Kharatin separated the sides in a fantastic victory for the visitors giving them their first three points of the campaign and leaving Athletic still looking for their first goal of the tournament.
Athletic will face Swedes Oestersunds, who beat Hertha Berlin by a goal to nil, in their next two games with the group now wide open as the two favourites sit on one point each having drawn with each other in Germany on Matchday one.
