Barcelona prepare to tie down key duo until 2022

Barcelona are preparing new contracts for duo Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto. Both players will see their current deals expire in 2019.

The new offers will keep both at the club until 2022 as Robert Fernandez casts an eye on the long term as they seek to avoid another exit like that of Neymar this summer.

That is the case for Sergi Roberto in particular. The homegrown midfielder’s release clause currently stands at just 40 million euros, and with several European clubs interested, there is concern that an English club would not hesitate to fork out such a fee. Chelsea and Manchester United were both linked in the summer.

Roberto, like Pique, has been a regular in Ernesto Valverde’s side as they have made a perfect start to their La Liga campaign.

The versatile Spaniard has also had more game time in his natural midfield role, only filling in at right-back when Nelson Semedo has been rested. That could prove vital to keeping him happy long-term.

After Andres Iniesta signed a supposedly lifelong deal, Lionel Messi remains the only key player yet to commit to a long term deal at the Camp Nou. Club bosses have assured the Catalan media that a deal is in place and insist that an announcement is simply a matter of time away.
