Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo has claimed his side did not deserve to lose to Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon.
The Basque side ended their losing streak with Mikel Vestga goal seeing off Berizzo’s men 1-0 at the San Mames.
The hosts played out a tight opening quarter. Los Leones had claims of handball when a man marked Adruiz got his toe to a cross which the keeper deflected onto his defender’s hand.
Sevilla went on to create the best two chances of the game. The first was a one on one which Kepa saved miraclously. The second also showcased the youngster potential, a Sevilla attacker cutting into the box and firing at the near post at close range, Kepa getting down quickly to save.
The opening goal was a scrappy piece of brillance at the end of the first half, Vestga getting his foot to a probing cross and chipping the out rushing keeper.
Bilbao could of had a second midway through the second half, the post dening Vestga a brace. A number of half chances followed in a second half that the home side probably edged through as the better side.
“In the first-half we had chances to score and push forwards and we conceded a goal from a throw-in that we shouldn’t have conceded. In the second half our play was much more disjointed but it was in the first where we missed chances to gain momentum, though on the balance of play I don’t think we deserved to lose,” Berizzo told reporters.
“The new full-backs played at a good level today and have substituted Escudero and Mercado well. I think we created chances but just failed to take them. The loss today affects us, the way the match went in the first-half will make us feel we deserved something else.”
The result sees Ziganda hand Berizzo’s Sevilla just their second loss of the season.
Up next, Sevilla head to Moscow in a key European tie while Athletic Club are in Europa League action against Ostersunds.
