Since he joined from Valencia last summer, life has not been easy for Paco Alcacer in Barcelona. Now no longer part of Ernesto Valverde’s plans, Southampton are one of several sides to have shown an interest in signing him.
The Spaniard started the 2017/18 season in the starting line-up but has since dropped out of the squad and struggled to even make the 18 man matchday squad on a regular basis.
Former Alaves boss Mauricio Pellegrino was at the club as Alcacer came through as a youngster and could now take him to Saint Mary’s as he desperately seeks to add goals to his team in the Premier League.
Barcelona have little to no hope of earning the 30 million euros that was paid for him only just over a year ago. With the deal late in the transfer window, the Catalan club were under pressure to provide cover for Luis Suarez.
His arrival sparked the departure of Sandro Ramirez, who went on to be prolific at Malaga, whilst Munir El Haddadi is yet to recover his place in the squad and is currently out on loan at Alaves.
There is believed to be interest in Alcacer from several clubs, but the asking price may put off some of Southampton’s competitors.
