Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has discussed his team selection and tactics after the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Tuesday evening in the Champions League.
In the first fixture between Madrid and Spurs, visiting boss Pochettino returned home to North London with a respectable point after Raphael Varane’s own goal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty settled the tie.
Both Spurs and Madrid now sit top of Group H on seven points after two wins and a draw each, whilst Dortmund and APOEL sit in third and fourth respectively.
The English side who had French international Hugo Lloris to thank for keeping the scoreline on level terms – sit third in the Premier League standings and the former Espanyol boss has given his thoughts on the game.
“I knew you would be surprised with the starting XI and how we will play,” he said. “I think it’s important to work to find different options to play, to surprise our opponent, to be flexible and have different ways to play.
“I think you know very well we can play with three at the back, four at the back, two strikers, one striker, three midfielders, two midfielders. We are so flexible in our ways. For different circumstances we decide to work and play in that way.
“I think we are happy because in the end it is working. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. We are happy because we compete and we put in a difficult situation the offensive players of Real Madrid and then we created the chances to score and win the game. I think we are happy in the way we competed.”
In the other Group H game, APOEL Nicosia held Borussia Dortmund, who despite their good form in the Bundesliga – have struggled in Europe, securing their first point of the competition in Cyprus.
Domestically, Madrid will now prepare to face Eibar on Saturday evening looking to maintain their improved form after a stuttering start which has left them behind league leaders Barcelona.
Spurs will face Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League; a side that beat Maribor 7-0 in their Champions League game on Tuesday evening.
