Sampdoria have reportedly rejected an offer made by Atletico Madrid for their star in the making, Lucas Torreira.
The 21 year old was seen as one of the many breakout stars of the Serie A last season. The Uruguayan is after making an average of three tackles and a further two interceptions per game this season.
According to Tuttosport, Diego Simeone’s side approached Sampdoria about signing the midfielder in January. The answer they received was a clear and stern ‘no’. That being said, there is still the possibility to the transfer going ahead in the summer.
This is an idea Sampdoria apparently didn’t reject. They clearly want to retain the services of the Uruguayan for the remainder of the season and hope a bidding war may ensue. The fact the Blucerchiati are currently involved in the Europa League, it furthers the reason behind holding onto their prized asset.
During the summer, Roma were linked with a move for the midfielder. They eventually went for Sussuolo dynamo Pelligrini instead.
Should Atleti end up buying Torreira, what will they expect to be getting? They would certainly be getting a type of player their lacklustre midfield need. Capable of both winning and retaining the ball, the 21 year old is also competent at dribbling. He has completed 83% of attempted dribbles this season as well as maintaining an 84% passing success rate.
Currently, Atletico’s midfield needs an extra bit of energy as they appear to wait for the return of Costa to kick things into gear. With Gabi coming to the end of his career and Augusto seemingly unable to shake off injuries, it will be interesting to see how Torreira progresses this season.
