Leganes 1-0 Athletic Bilbao: Pressure Mounts on Ziganda

October 22, 2017 Off By Kristofer McCormack

Athletic club capped off a disappointing week with a 1-0 defeat away to Leganes on Sunday.

After a draw away to Ostersunds in the Europa League, Los Leones came into this game looking to return to winning ways. They, however, started on the back foot at the Burtarque. Though the game was denied of clear cut chances, Leganes controlled the tempo and penned Los Leones into their own boxes. The Basques barely got out of their own half, a wasted corner their only attack of note at half time.

Ironically, Athletic started the second half with the two best chances of the game. First Iniaki Williams found space to get a shot away from 6 yards only for the keeper to parry it away. The resulting corner broke to San Jose whose header rattled the crossbar.

The play leading up to the home’s team goal will make the aivid football fan cringe. The move starts wity a sleepwalking San Jose being disopossed. Beauvue then dribbles into the Athletic beating a lunging Nunez, cutting across another Athletic defender before pounding the ball into the roof of the net.

Leganes had kept 4 clean sheets in a row coming into this game and weren’t really challenged on their way to a fifth. In fact, they should feel disappointed not to have scored a second when Amarabat muscled past two Athletic defenders only for his shot to be saved by Kepa.

WHY NOT READ:   Inaki Williams has not scored at San Mames since 2016

The win sees Leganes jump to fifth while Athletic stay in eleventh with more pressure heaped on Ziganda’s shoulders.
