Barcelona began the defence of their title with a confident performance and 3-0 win away to Real Murcia.
Ernesto Valverde made many changes as expected but it was still a strong side he named. However it took them until the last minute of the first half to open the scoring. Gerard Deulofeu picking out Paco Alcacer who directed his header into the back of the net.
Two goals in five minutes then made for a more comfortable ending as Deulofeu slid the ball into the far corner of the net before youngster Jose Arnaiz smashed the ball home from 20 yards for number three.
Goals from Pablo Sarabia, Joaquin Correa and Luis Muriel saw Sevilla comfortably dispatch of third tier Cartagena.
The La Liga side dominated the game early on and opened the scoring on 25 minutes. Pablo Sarabia raced on to Wissam Ben Yedder’s through ball before chipping the ball over the keeper and into the net.
Ten minutes later it was two when Joaquin Correa made a great run into the box before a bit of pinball in the box resulted in Correa controlling Ganso’s back-heel and passing the ball into the net.
Half time substitute Luis Muriel made it three after six minutes of the second half rounding the goalkeeper before slotting the ball into the empty net.
Sevilla were able to cruise through the rest of the game and could have made it four had it not been for a fine save by goalkeeper Marcos to deny Muriel his second.
Elsewhere, Malaga’s poor form continued as they lost 2-1 at Segunda side Numancia in remarkable fashion.
The La Liga side took the lead through Recio’s outstanding free kick and looked destined for a crucial first leg win as they entered stoppage time but Nacho stroked home from the edge of the area to equalise on 92 minutes before in the 95th minute Alberto Escassi’s header hit the post only for him to nod home the rebound and give Numancia a lead to take to La Rosaleda in a month’s time.
Valencia left it late to secure a crucial away win at Zaragoza as goals from Rodrigo and Dani Parejo gave the visitors a 2-0 win.
Rodrigo nodded home from five yards out after a short corner in the 81st minute before Parejo slotted home a penalty after Nacho Gil had been felled in the box.
A double from Sergio Leon helped Real Betis to a 2-1 win at Cadiz although they were made to work hard for their victory.
They took the lead on six minutes when Leon bent a shot into the top corner from 20 yards but the home side levelled things up on 21 minutes.
Alex Fernandez hit the ball towards goal after it fell to him in the box but saw his shot saved by Dani Gimenez however it rebounded back off of the midfielder and into the net.
Leon scored the winner though on 54 minutes when he received Nahuel’s cutback and smashed the ball into the back of the net.
Alaves were able to sneak a 1-0 victory over Getafe through a late header by Christian Santos at the Coliseum.
