Ponferradina provided the shock of the round so far by beating Villarreal 1-0 at El Toralin in their first leg.
The Segunda B side scored the only goal of the game after 37 minutes through a fantastic free kick by Sergio Cidoncha as he bent the ball into the top corner from 30 yards.
The visitors had a lot of the ball and went close on a couple of occasions, mainly through Denis Cheryshev, but were unable to find a way into the net.
Third tier Formentera held La Liga giants Athletic Bilbao to a 1-1 draw in the early kick off in the Copa del Rey.
The islanders more than held their own in the first half and would have been ahead had it not been for a fantastic save from Kepa in the Athletic goal to deny Juan Antonio Sanchez what looked a certain goal.
However the minnows did take the lead just past the hour mark. A long free kick wasn’t cleared properly and dropped for Fernando Linan to volley home from 12 yards out.
The lead lasted just two minutes though as Raul Garcia headed home with his first touch of the ball after replacing Kike Sola.
Athletic coach Cuco Ziganda conceded that his team weren’t at their best but is confident going back to San Mames.
“The first half was crazy, it is difficult to generate superiorities on that pitch. In the second half we tried to tighten, but we were not very effective. We hoped to win, we do not have to go happy. We needed to make the field big, to generate more danger.” We came to win and we have not succeeded. We are sure to win the tie. We know there are two games, back and forth and an opportunity for those who do not play. It is about passing in San Mamés. We needed to be more convincing. The result is fair. ”
Atletico Madrid were also forced to settle for a first leg draw as Elche held them 1-1 at the Martinez Valero.
The capital side took the lead after 17 minutes when Thomas Partey nodded home from Jose Gimenez’s cross.
Elche were causing problems however and after six minutes of the second half were level. Lolo stepping up to slot the ball past Miguel Angel Moya from the penalty spot.
Both sides had further chances to score but in the end it stayed level.
Elsewhere, Leganes scored late through Claude Beauvue to sneak a victory in the first leg at the Jose Zorilla against Valladolid. They took the lead after less than a minute of the second half when Diego Rico smashed home on the angle but the hosts equalised soon after due to Antonio Cotan’s header before Beauvue struck the winner.
Goals from Gustavo Cabral and John Guidetti helped Celta to win at Eibar for the second time in just over a month.
Cabral’s header after just four minutes put the visitors in front before Sergi Enrich bundled home an equaliser for the hosts quarter of an hour later. However Guidetti went on to win the game for Celta nodding past Asier Riesgo at the end of the first half.
