Sevilla 2-1 Leganes: Much needed victory for Andalusian hosts

Sevilla gained a much needed victory over Leganes to secure three points which ends a run of two consecutive defeats.

The hosts ended a poor run which has seen them also beat in-form Leganes, who suffered their biggest defeat of the season.

The game failed to start as scheduled due to the hot temperatures in Seville but it was Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia who were hotter than anybody when it did get going, hitting the back of the net either side of half time to give the home side a 2-0 lead.

Alexander Szymanowski pulled one back from the penalty spot for the visitors.

Heading into the Saturday afternoon kick-off between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, Diego Simeone’s side were hoping to bounce back after four draws in five games but they failed to get the better of Javi Calleja’s much improved side.

The home side did open the scoring through Angel Correa on the hour mark after the tricky winger slotting home, but their lead would last just twenty minutes as Bacca found space and headed in from close range to share the points.

The draw means Atletico sit in fourth place, level on points with Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, league leaders Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao thanks to goals from Leo Messi and Paulinho.

Whilst, Valencia, who sit in second place beat Alaves away from home.

A 2-1 victory over Alaves ensured they remained their for another round of fixtures, thanks to goals from Simone Zaza and Rodrigo.

Italian international Zaza lashed home in the ninth minute to score a goal which was his ninth in the league, whilst Spanish international Rodrigo smashed home the winner from the penalty spot in the second half.

Central defender Alexis scored for the home side, who are now sat in 19th place – four points from safety, just above Malaga.
