Athletic Club boss Jose Angel Ziganda has said he is happy with his side’s performance, despite losing 2-0 to Barcelona on Saturday.
The Basque side gave one of their best performances of the season but it was not enough to stop league leaders Barcelona, winning 2-0 at the San Mames
It was a high paced and intense start to the game with both sides creating chances. The home side best chance came from a ball over the top putting Aduriz one on one only to be denied by Ter Stegen. Messi then had a chance of his own after some wonderful build up sent him clear on goal, he rounded Kepa and hit the post at a tight angle.
Barca have looked to Messi to provide the magic this season and he was at his brilliant best for the opener. A quick one two with Paulinho before playing a defense splitting pass into Alba who crossed back into the box for the Argentine to finish. Paulinho then had a chance, a drawback to the Brazillian saw his shot hit the woodwork. The game ended with a Barca free kick that was cleared by the Basques.
The second half was quite a different affair than the first, Barca sat back to absorb the pressure while Athletic bossed proceedings. However, the final ball was extremely poor and despite playing most of the second half around the Barca box, Los Leones failed to make a breakthrough.
Aduriz near post header was the home side best chance of the second 45. The Catalans put the game to bed in additional time, catching Athletic Club short of numbers at the back, Messi was given enough room to lay off to Suarez who shot was saved by Kepa.
Unfortunately, the rebound fell to Paulinho who tapped home for his 3rd goal of the season.
“I’m happy because we played a good game and sad because we couldn’t finish our chances like Barça,” Ziganda told reporters following the game.
Barcelona remain top of the league and although Athletic winless streak continues, they can take alot of positives from this game.
