Athletic Club have handed central defender Unai Nunez a new five-year deal at the club, it has been confirmed.
The 20-year-old defender has been in excellent form this season so far for the Basque side and was in particularly good form against Barcelona on Saturday evening at the new San Mames.
Having started all ten games for Jose Angel Ziganda’s side this season, Nunez has now penned a new deal which will keep him at the club until June 2023, agreeing a release clause of €30m in the process.
His form for Athletic has also seen him called up for the Spanish U21 side, and gained interest from a number of bigger European clubs.
Athletic who pushed league leaders Barcelona on Saturday evening saw goals from Lionel Messi and Paulinho condemn them to a fifth defeat in their opening ten La Liga games.
Having drawn with Östersund two weeks ago in the Europa League, they will now prepare for Thursday’s return clash, hoping to end a run of no wins in four in all competitions.
Their opponents on Saturday meanwhile – Barcelona, have now moved to eight points clear of bitter rivals and main title contenders Real Madrid, who lost 2-1 to Girona on Sunday afternoon.
