Carvajal unavailable for Madrid derby; Navas outNovember 14, 2017
Dani Carvajal has failed to recover in time for the weekend’s Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
News filtered out of the Bernabeu last month that the Spanish international had been diagnosed with a viral infection that was affecting his heart, therefore seeing him ruled out of action – indefinitely.
Achraf Hakimi was handed his first team debut by Zinedine Zidane in the 2-0 win over Espanyol last month following the news, whilst the club waited on further reports and diagnosis from doctors.
El Mundo have reported that the defender will miss two months of action, but it was believed by Spanish daily Marca the defender is close to a return and is set to come back against Atleti at the weekend.
“Dani is doing well and the result of the tests is good news,” Zidane told reporters last week. “He has been cycling today and whilst he is healthy there is a recovery process he must go through and we will and see how that goes.”
However, further reports claim that Carvajal has now been ruled out.
Carvajal, who has established himself as a first choice defender at the club, signed a new contract earlier this year, committing him to the club until 2022.
Furthermore, Keylor Navas remains on the sidelines after failing to recover in time from his hamstring injury, meaning Kiko Casilla will play in goal.
Madrid have picked themselves up after a poor start to the La Liga season, having now won four consecutive league games since the defeat to Real Betis last month and they will be looking to further improve when they meet Diego Simeone’s side at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Elsewhere, league leaders Barcelona will travel to Leganes looking to further break away from Valencia and Madrid.
