Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz has agreed a new contract with the Basque giants to remain at the club until 2019.
The veteran striker turns 37 in February and there were questions on whether he would retire at the end of the season. The new deal will mean that the forward, originally from San Sebastián, will be at least 38 when he eventually retires.
Adruiz stay with Athletic club has been spilt over three spells, with his most recent move coming in 2012 and he has now appeared in over 300 games for the Basque side.
In 2015, Aduriz scored four goals across two legs in the Spanish Supercopa against Barcelona. His goals ensured that Athletic club ended their long trophy drought and sent the city into raptures.
With a 40 million euro release clause, it seems likely that the former Spanish international will retire at the club.
“I consider this club my family,” he said upon signing his new deal.
Athletic club fans will be hoping that the new deal will inspire Aduriz to step up and carry the club, who have been struggling for form this season and Aduriz seems confident the results will come: “We are looking forward to turning our situation around, adding three points will allow us to move forwards, step by step.”
Athletic play Villarreal at the San Mames on Sunday.
