Maxi Gomez is centred around a bid from an unnamed Chinese club. €20-25 million is believed to be the sum the Chinese club have tabled. Having signed in the summer for €4 million, this would prove a significant profit in a short space of time.
Having arrived from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting during the summer, Gomez has proved a valuable asset for Celta. He started life in La Liga with two goals on his debut and has been decent for the Galician’s since. The 21 year old now has five goals to his name in the Primera Division. He has also picked up six yellow cards in his ten games however.
Should Celta Vigo look to take the offer on the table from the unnamed Chinese club, there are a number of issues they need to contend with. One being that their system is largely around having Gomez as the main striker. In his place, the responsibility of goals would fall on Iago Aspas or John Guidetti.
With Aspas playing as a winger for the majority of the season, it would leave Celta with the Swedish striker as their main replacement. During the summer, Guidetti was expected to be sold on however. Unzue’s attitude toward the striker would suggest this is still his intention for the former Man City man. Guidetti has made his four appearances from the bench, amassing only 52 minutes in Celta Vigo’s 11 La Liga games.
The other issue Celta face should they sell Gomez is his old club would receive 20% of any transfer. This automatically reduces the significance of the transfer fee. Gomez scored 29 goals and provided 12 assists during his 52 appearances for Defensor. Should Gomez continue to make strides forward in his development, Celta would receive a much higher sum in the summer.
Defensor Sporting president Daniel Jablonka has issued a statement on the proposed transfer. “There is an offer from China for Maxi Gomez. They have offered approximately €25 million to Celta de Vigo but Maxi wants to stay in Europe.”
If Celta accept, will Maxi Gomez be willing to leave at such a young and developing age to an alien culture? With guaranteed game time and support from a manager who builds the attack around him, the 21 year old should remain at Celta Vigo.
