Griezmann to stay at Atletico, claims Cerezo

Atleti President, Enrique Cerezo has laughed off claims that Antoine Griezmann will leave the club any time soon, insisting that the Frenchman wants to stay at Wanda Metropolitano.

In an interview with Europa Press on Tuesday (14th), Mr Cerezo said that Griezmann ‘wants to stay here. That is what he is saying and nowhere has he said he wants to leave us, in fact he has said the opposite. He has a contract with Atletico.’

Earlier this week, the player sparked speculation of a move to Paris Saint-Germain when he admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to play with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, however Cerezo believes his star striker made that statement as a joke. ‘You do not understand Griezmann, or his sense of humour,’ he added, before he suggested that the French club’s players could join Griezmann in Madrid, saying: ‘What you don’t know is that maybe those two could come here.’

The forward hasn’t had the strongest of starts this season for Los Colchoneros, scoring only 2 goals in 9 games in La Liga. During last week’s international break he did score in France’s 2-0 win against Wales, however played 62 minutes in that match as well as featuring for only 16 minutes in his country’s 2-2 draw with current World Cup holders, Germany. With Saturday’s sold out Madrid derbi being held at the club’s new home, the club’s number 7 will be hoping to help his side continue their unbeaten run in the league by adding a couple of goals to his tally.

It was widely reported during the summer that Manchester United had targeted Griezmann and were close to signing him but Atletico’s transfer ban scuppered the potential deal. Recently, reports in Spain have suggested that league leaders Barcelona have taken the lead in the race for the striker’s signature and were already in advanced negotiations, however judging by President Cerezo’s comments, it is looking that a move away from Madrid isn’t on the cards in the immediate future for the 26 year old.
