Despite the scores of talent that has emerged from Belgium over the last few years, there can’t have been too many occasions that there’s been scouts from some of the world’s top clubs at Royal Excel Mouscron.
But that’s exactly what happened on Saturday, with Barcelona reportedly sending scouts to track the progress of Anderlecht’s Henry Onyekeru – one of the league’s hottest prospects. On-loan from Premier League side Everton, Onyekeru notched his seventh goal of the season and the Barca representatives present were said to be impressed.
Onyekeru signed for The Toffees in the summer from Belgian First Division A club Eupen, having scored 28 goals in 57 games and been sought after across Europe. He was immediately loaned back to Belgium to it’s top side Anderlecht and has been playing Champions League football in a ‘Group of Death’ that includes Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain and Scottish champions Celtic.

Despite still being just 20, Onyekeru’s form has led to him being capped by his country Nigeria already – making his debut in a 3-0 win against Togo in May. Having reportedly chosen to sign for Everton due to the influence of Ronald Koeman, it may be hard for the Merseyside club to keep hold of their prospect if Koeman’s ex-club Barcelona come calling.
Barcelona, who have Ousmane Dembele still to come back from injury, are looking for a long-term replacement to Luis Suarez. If Onyekeru keeps up his goal-every-other-game record he currently has in Belgium – he could well be the man for the job.
