Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Villarreal: Honours even after Aduriz levelsNovember 19, 2017
Aritz Aduriz rescued a point for Athletic Bilbao as they drew 1-1 with Villarreal on Sunday evening.
Heading into Sunday night’s late kick-off, it was fair to say the visitors were in better form, winning four of their last five plus an impressive draw with Atletico Madrid.
The home side in contrast had not won a league game since September.
Having started the game well, the Basque’s fell behind in the first half to a Manuel Trigueros strike.
Trigueros, who has been in superb form this season had missed an earlier spot kick before firing the visitors ahead.
The second half was fairly similar to the first as Athletic continued to push for a goal, but their countless efforts failed to test the visitors resolve.
However, the new San Mames were celebrating as veteran striker Aritz Aduriz struck to make it 1-1.
The result leaves Bilbao sitting 12th in the La Liga standings, whilst Villarreal now sit sixth and just three points behind Real Madrid in third place.
Both will now prepare for their respective Europa League games as the home side face Astana and the visitors will play Hertha Berlin in Germany.
Elsewhere on Sunday, the biggest talking point came as Geoffrey Kondogbia and Santi Mina struck to give Valencia another victory, beating Espanyol 2-0.
