Sevilla have confirmed that Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and that the players knew before the Champions League tie with Liverpool.
Sevillainfo.es were among the first to break the news that the Argentine coach had been diagnosed with the illness and that he informed his players during the break at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, however, the latter has now been called false and that the squad knew before the Tuesday evening fixture.
Berizzo will now make a decision on whether or not to undergo treatment and will need an operation if so.
“The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the Coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo , has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate,” read a Sevilla statement.
“The future examinations will lead to a decision regarding which are the steps to follow regarding their treatment.
“Sevilla FC wants to show their full support for our Coach right now and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Goals from Roberto Firmino (2) and Sadio Mane gave Liverpool a 3-0 lead after half-an-hour in the Champions League clash but an inspired comeback from the home side saw them level it up.
Wissam Ben Yedder, who has been a revelation in the competition this season – bagged an impressive brace, before Guido Pizarro sent the home fans into raptures in the 94th minute of time.
Whilst reports claim Berizzo that told his players at half-time of his diagnosis are now ruled out; the squad can be seen following the full-time whistle gathering together on the pitch, in what many believe was a show of unity for their coach.
