Reports claim that Maxi Gomez is set to join a un-named Chinese Club for around €20-25 million, with a deal set to be completed this week.
Having arrived from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting during the summer, Gomez has proved a valuable asset for Celta.
He started life in La Liga with two goals on his debut and has been decent for the Galician’s since, scoring an impressive eight goals in 14 appearances.
Should Celta Vigo look to take the offer on the table from the unnamed Chinese club, there are a number of issues they need to contend with.
One being that their system is largely around having Gomez as the main striker. In his place, the responsibility of goals would fall on Iago Aspas or John Guidetti.
With Aspas playing as a winger for the majority of the season, it would leave Celta with the Swedish striker as their main replacement. During the summer, Guidetti was expected to be sold on however.
Unzue’s attitude toward the striker would suggest this is still his intention for the former Man City man, with Guidetti has made his four appearances from the bench, amassing only 52 minutes in Celta Vigo’s 11 La Liga games.
The other issue Celta face should they sell Gomez is his old club would receive 20% of any transfer and this automatically reduces the significance of the transfer fee.
Gomez scored 29 goals and provided 12 assists during his 52 appearances for Defensor.
Should Gomez continue to make strides forward in his development, Celta would receive a much higher sum in the summer.
