Gerard Moreno scored the only goal of the game to ensure three points for Espanyol against Getafe on Monday evening.
Heading into the game, home boss Quique Sanchez Flores knew his side had to gain all three points after failing to get a win in their last three games.
And, they started brightly, almost opening the scoring through much-wanted left-back Aaron Martin, who was allowed to run forward before unleashing an effort at Vicente Guaita, but the former Valencia man tipped his effort over the crossbar.
Five minutes later and Mario Hermoso tried his luck, heading from Pablo Piatti’s free-kick but the defender saw his effort hit the crossbar.
Getafe would then have a chance of their own as Angel won the ball on the half-way line, drove forward and played in veteran striker Jorge Molina, but the former Real Betis man failed to continue his run of form, being blocked by home keeper Pau Lopez.
Molina would have another effort shortly after but David Lopez was on hand to block the striker and keep the score on level terms.
The visitors were made to pay for their missed chances as Moreno scored the only goal of the game with ten minutes remaining.
The in-form striker got the faintest of touches on Piatti’s cross to beat Guaita from close range and ensure all three points stayed in the Catalan capital.
