Leganes stormed to a 3-1 win over Villarreal on Sunday morning thanks to goals from Diego Rico, Nabil El Zhar and Gabriel Pires.
Much was expected from the visitors after their 3-2 defeat against Sevilla last week but Javi Calleja’s side failed to bounce back, despite taking the lead.
A rare start for 22-year-old midfielder Daniel Raba saw the youngster open the scoring after a fine assist from the impressive Manu Trigueros.
However, a resurgent comeback from the home side saw Diego Rico score 12 minutes later after former Watford forward Nordin Amrabat assisted.
El Zhar completed the turn-around eight minutes later, before the three points were sealed thanks to a 93rd minute goal from Gabriel Pires.
The result leaves Villarreal having failed to win in their last three games, gaining just one point against Athletic Bilbao two weeks back.
Calleja’s side sit sixth and prepare to host Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona next weekend at the Madrigal.
The home side move into seventh place, having made an excellent start to the domestic season, which has come from six wins, two draws and six defeats to in their opening 14 games.
Asier Garitano’s side now prepare to face Deportivo next Saturday, where they are expected to gain another three points.
