Getafe produced a superb performance with ten-men for an hour to beat Valencia, who lost for the first time this season.
With Barcelona drawing to Celta Vigo on Saturday afternoon, it was down to Marcelino’s impressive Valencia to move to within a point of the league leaders.
However, despite dominating possession and having the more chances – they lost to a brilliant and professional Getafe side.
The hosts fell to ten-men as soon as the 25th minute after Uruguayan defender Mauro Arambarri picked two bookings in the space of five minutes to be sent his marching orders.
Valencia, though, failed to capitalise on their advantage and headed into the half-time break on level terms.
Markel Bergara then set the La Liga title race alight, giving the home side a surprising lead after the hour mark.
Valencia pushed for a leveller but chances for Santi Mina, Simone Zaza and Rodrigo proved very few and far between.
The game turned into a largely scrappy affair late on as a total of ten bookings were handed out.
The home side who lost 3-0 to Alaves in the Copa del Rey in mid-week now sit eighth in the La Liga standings, whilst Valencia continue to sit in second place, having seen the likes of Real Madrid fail to win.
