Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has called on his players to believe ahead of their Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night.
Diego Simeone’s side need three points and a draw in the Roma-Qarabag game to progress, however, their form in the competition this year has left many predicting a group stage exit.
Luis, who scored in at the weekend was speaking to reporters ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge and he said that his side need to believe in their ability.
“This will be a very difficult game for us, but we must not stop believing,” Luis told reporters.
“It is important not to give up hope and to keep going, even though we know we will need to rely on a team other than just ourselves.
“In terms of the rest of the season, we must be more proactive in games and take the initiative as we are leaving ourselves too vulnerable to drawing matches.
“On Saturday we started very slowly and were punished, which made things very difficult so we must learn from that.”
Atleti remain unbeaten in La Liga but their form in Europe has seen them lose to Chelsea and draw twice with Qarabag.
Chelsea have already qualified for the knock-out stages but Roma could face elimination if they fail to beat Qarabag and Atleti are victorious in England.
An exit in the early stages would see them move into the Europa League, a competition they have an illustrious history in.
However, Simeone will be left ruing after stating at the start of the season after saying his ambition was to win the competition this season.
Following Tuesday’s game, Atleti prepare to face Real Betis on Sunday in a bid to push league leaders Barcelona, who are the only other unbeaten side in the league.
