Saul discusses title hopes and Atletico Madrid patience

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has discusses his side title hopes and the club’s mentality after remaining unbeaten in the league.

Diego Simeone’s side remain unbeaten in domestic football, having come from behind to beat Real Sociedad at the weekend.

Whilst the Wanda Metropolitano club sit third in the table behind Valencia and Barcelona, respectively; many are predicting Simeone’s men to produce a title challenge with the latter after the winter break.

With Real Madrid having dropped more points at the weekend and Valencia having lost their first game of the season – Atleti are the only unbeaten side along with the Catalan giants.

Saul, who has been ever impressing in the heart of the midfield, believes his side can win the title but has spoken of their mentality.

“Right now we are only thinking about taking one match at a time,” Saul told reporters, as quoted by Marca.

“We have no thoughts about anything longer term than that, whether it’s a title challenge or trying to secure a top four spot.

“The only thoughts we are allowing ourselves to have are in the immediate future and to ensure we keep our winning momentum.

“It is always important for the team to win, so even if there is frustration that you are not playing well, winning is the crucial aspect and I am happy to help that.

“Right now we are playing well and winning matches, so we are happy but we must keep working.

“In terms of the Champions League, we have to win our game and then wait, maybe Qarabag can help us!”

Whilst, Atleti do remain unbeaten in La Liga but their form in Europe has seen them lose to Chelsea and draw twice with Qarabag.

Chelsea have already qualified for the knock-out stages but Roma could face elimination if they fail to beat Qarabag and Atleti are victorious in England.

An exit in the early stages would see them move into the Europa League, a competition they have an illustrious history in.

However, Simeone will be left ruing after stating at the start of the season after saying his ambition was to win the competition this season.

Following Tuesday’s game, Atleti prepare to face Real Betis on Sunday in a bid to push league leaders Barcelona.
