Maribor 1-1 Sevilla: Berizzo’s men qualify after draw

Sevilla have managed to secure a place in the Champions League round of 16 following a 1-1 draw against Maribor.

The away side dominated the game in terms of possession but it was the hosts who went ahead after 10 minutes when Marcos Tavares fired give past Sergio Rico to Maribor an unexpected 1-0 lead.

Ernesto Marcucci side went into the break 1-0 down but were still progressing as the other game in the group was going in their favour, as Liverpool were beating Spartak Moscow 3-0 but Marcucci wouldn’t want his side to progress in that fashion and knew a strong teamtalk would get his players motivated for the second half.

15 minutes from time the Sevillistas found an equaliser through midfielder Ganso who struck his shot home from 20 yards out following a great pass by Joaquin Correa.

The away side had a few more chances as the second half went on including a shot from Jesus Navas  and could’ve won the game if it wasn’t for the performance of goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic who kept the scores level. But it didn’t matter as by the time the game had finished Sevilla were already through as Liverpool had thrashed Moscow 7-0.

After the game midfielder Ever Banega spoke about how the team has achieved something that they wanted to do since pre-season and is happy to be against some of Europe’s best teams in the competition.

All eyes will be on Nyon on Monday for the draw of the last 16 where the six teams they could possibly face are Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, PSG , Roma and Besiktas.

However Sevilla have an important game beforehand when they face Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid in the league on Saturday.
