Just one point currently separates Espanyol and Girona. As both sides endured a defeat last weekend, the Catalan clubs are looking forward to Monday’s derby.
Espanyol were brushed aside by Eibar at the Ipurua to lose 3-1. Meanwhile, Girona had a painful defeat at home at the Montilivi. From 2-0 up, they ended up losing 2-3 to visitors Alavés.
A win for Girona could see them reach their current goal of 20 points, while a win for Espanyol could see them hop over their local rivals in the table.
Girona has some major defensive problems due to a mounting number of injuries. On top of being without Amagat and Kayode, the Whites and Reds are missing defenders Alcalá, Planas, Espinosa and Muniesa.
The defensive errors cost them last week when they conceded late and preventable goals. It is likely that Girona coach Pablo Machín will convert a midfielder into a defensive role, probably David Timor as he has experience in that role from his time at other clubs. At any rate, today’s matchup is unlikely to be a clean sheet for the visitors.
Espanyol are faring a little better, but the Periquitos are also without Sánchez, López, García and Morillas. Espanyol has been facing an issue with scoring goals, only netting 11 from the first 14 matches of the season. A completely untested Girona defense gives Espanyol the perfect opportunity to increase that statistic.
Kick-off is Monday at 9pm CET / 8pm BST.
