Goals from Ibai Gomez and Munir El Haddadi gave Alaves a 2-0 victory over Las Palmas.
Alaves continued their improved form under new boss Abelardo at the Estadio Mendizorrotza to overtake their opponents in the La Liga standings.
The home side came into Friday night’s game looking for a second successive victory after coming from behind last week to beat Girona in Abelardo’s first game in charge.
Las Palmas meanwhile, had recorded just one win in ten matches after beating Real Betis last weekend.
Ibai Gomez, who netted a hat-trick in that win over Girona, opened the scoring after just 23 minutes, pouncing on a rebound after Alfonso Pedraza’s low effort.
On-loan forward Munir El Haddadi doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half after he stabbed the ball in at the near post.
Defender Alexis hit the bar late on as Alaves saw out the game and secured an impressive three points.
Meanwhile on Saturday, five first half goals for Real Madrid saw them beat Sevilla 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Santiago Bernabeu.
Having won the Ballon d’Or in midweek, Cristiano Ronaldo was heralded before the game on Saturday and he celebrated his fifth honour in style, scoring twice as Zinedine Zidane’s side eased to a win over Sevilla.
Whilst, Saturday’s other big game saw Valencia get themselves back to winning ways thanks to goals from Simone Zaza and Dani Parejo, beating Celta Vigo 2-1 with Iago Aspas scoring for the visitors.
