Former Barcelona and Arsenal defender Ignasi Miquel is now a Malaga player. The centre-half, who can also play at left-back joins from CD Lugo, signing a four-year contract.
Miquel was able to complete the move outside of the transfer window as La Liga gave the club special dispensation following the long-term injury sustained by left-back Juankar in the 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid.
The former La Masia graduate, who turned pro with Arsenal, had renewed his contract with Lugo until 2020 just this summer. However, Malaga have paid his 350,000-euros release clause.
This signing ends Malaga’s search for a defender. Sergio Sánchez, who played for Malaga from 2011 to 2015, was originally earmarked with head coach Míchel prematurely announcing that his signing would be completed “within 48 hours”. However, the defender on loan at Espanyol from Russian side Rubin Kazan, has already played for two sides this campaign and therefore cannot play for a third, according to Fifa rules.
Miquel, who was on the bench for Malaga’s 2-0 away win against Real Sociedad, was officially presented on Monday.
He said: “We all know Malaga’s history; I don’t believe they deserve to be in this position.
“I’m so pleased to be here at this club and excited about such a wonderful opportunity. I’m eager to help and keep growing as a player.”
Miquel will wear the number 2 shirt.
