With the January transfer window on the horizon, Atletico Madrid are set for some good news after yesterday’s Antoine Griezmann bombshell as defender, Jose Gimenez is set to pen a new contract at the Wanda Metropolitana.
A top transfer target for both Italian and English giants Juventus and Manchester United, the Uruguayan international has become a back-up option in the Atletico defence in recent times.
Signed from Danubio in 2013, the 22-year old isn’t currently first choice despite the Atleti hierarchy thinking he is a fantastic player and see him the future successor to his Uruguay counterpart, Diego Godin. Currently behind Godin and Stefan Savic in the centre-back pecking order; he has only started four La Liga matches this season so far.
Gimenez is an experienced operator at the top level despite his age, having made 111 appearances for Atletico—22 of which have come in the Champions League and has earned 39 caps for his country. He has played at a World Cup – which is set to become two next summer in Russia – two Copa Americas, and three Champions League campaigns to the Champions League final. The progression of the young defender however could see him become one of the world’s best.
It seems the young defender is set to commit to Atletico and sign a new deal until 2022 despite both sides willing to pay the £58m release clause.
