Having seen some of their top players move during the summer, Monaco may have to watch another move again. Fabinho, linked with Manchester United during the summer has recently been talking about a potential move to Atletico Madrid.
With the main stars in the Champions League semi-finalists moving during the summer, Fabinho did not receive the same opportunity. Paris Saint-Germain and Man United were linked with the Brazilian and will now look to follow up.
With Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban ending in January, the two European giants will face stiff competition for Fabinho. Diego Simeone’s side will want to add to the already agreed signings of Diego Costa and Vitolo. With Fabinho having spent the 2012/13 season on loan with Real Madrid Castilla – playing one game for the senior side – he will be no stranger to Spain.
The midfielder spoke about the potential move to Atletico Madrid with ESPN during the week: “It’s my last season at Monaco. I don’t think there’s the possibility to leave [in January].”
“I’ve not had any contact and I haven’t asked to leave in January. I’m calm at Monaco, and I wouldn’t be able to play in the Champions League with another team.”
“During the transfer window and even in the month after, it was a difficult situation to handle [not leaving]. I should have left, I didn’t leave. But I’m not thinking about that any more – the page has been turned.”
“It’s a possibility [joining Atletico], but no one from Atletico has spoken to me or my agent … We’re talking about the summer transfer window, but a lot of things can happen between now and then. I’ll have to show that I have the level to play in teams like that. We’ll talk about that in May.”
There were reports in June that the Monaco ace had a meal with Atleti’s director Miguel Angel Gil Martin along with super agent Jorge Mendes. With Atleti under a transfer ban at the time, it is possible they were working out a transfer for the winter window or even this summer.
With Atleti now in the Europa League, they would offer Fabinho European football should he move in January. It seems there is an agreement in place with Monaco to allow the 24 year old move in the summer. This potential move to Atletico Madrid would certainly add to an area left void by Tiago in the summer.
