La Liga News UK End of Year Awards: Player

Welcome back to our La Liga News UK End of Year Awards

If you missed our manager of the year vote, you can still vote here. For those who are returning, here are a quick recap of our rules for the public vote.

  1. The candidate should be judged only on their performances between 1st January to 31st December 2017.
  2. The candidate must be playing in Spain.
  3. Voting closes at midnight on the 15th January 2018.

Today’s category is the player of the year and here are our four nominees for the prize:

  1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

No surprises to see Barcelona’s magician on the list for player of the year. The Argentine has been the main difference in Spain for much of his career and 2017 has been no different. Messi has scored 49 goals for Barcelona in 2017 (at the time of writing), among those goals was a brace in the Clasico, including the winner and 14 league goals in the opening half of the 2017/2018 to help Barcelona to an unbeaten start.  In Europe, the highlight reel continues, two goals in the famous remontada against PSG, a brace against Juventus at the Camp Nou and scoring his 100th Champions League goal against Olympiakos. Another superb year for Messi, but will is it enough?

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

One cant be mentioned without the other in fast pursuit. Cirstiano Ronaldo has an equally impressive 2017 as Messi, having scored 42 club goals in all competitions in 48 games. The Portuguese superstar helped his side to seal the La Liga crown and despite only scoring four league goals so far in the new seasons, the records continue to fall for Ronaldo in Europe. Consecutive hatricks against Bayern Munich in the quarters and Atletico Madrid in the semi finals, the first player to score in three Champions League finals, his brace helping Madrid to a 12th Champions League title and becoming the first player to score in all six group stage games. To cap it all off, Ronaldo has won five trophies this year. It surely ranks as among his finest in his career, does he get your vote?

3. Marc Andre Ter Stegen (Barcelona)

I’m fond of an underdog for these awards and when I think of a dark horse for the title of best player in 2017, I think Ter Stegen. An impressive 16 clean sheets in La Liga in 2017, even the Barcelona Twitter account couldn’t resist pointing out the German’s influence. At one point this season, the German had saved 23 of the last 24 shots on goal. Since then, he hasn’t dipped form and remains as clutch a goalkeeper as I recall seeing. Is he your player of the year?

4. Isco

If Ter Stegen is the dark horse on this list then Isco is the turnaround story this. The Spaniard was argubably a utility player in Zinedine Zidane side when we entered the new year, but, it didn’t deter Isco. Given the chance to impressive due to Bale’s health problems, Isco has forced himself into Zidane’s plans and the Frenchman hasn’t strayed from him since. After playing a big part in sealing Los Blancos’s double, Isco has been the bright spark of a dissapointing opening. He is joint top scorer in La Liga for Madrid this season and one must wonder where Real Madrid would be without him. Will a Spaniard be taking home the player of the year title this year?
