It seems that Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves could be on his way out of Mestalla after his agent Grazziano Battistini told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, the club’s official radio station,
“Diego [Alves] wants a top-level club and Napoli would fit. We’re looking for options at the highest level for his future because he needs fresh motivation and adrenaline. We’re talking about a goalkeeper of the highest level and he deserves a club of that same calibre, no offence to Valencia. Napoli would match.”
There have been doubts about his future since the appointment of Marcelino as the new boss of the east coast club, and this kind of talk from his agent all but confirms that the ex-Villarreal boss is not counting on the Brazilian.
Alves has been one of the club’s stand-out performers over recent seasons, particularly with his track record of saving penalties. With several other goalkeepers in the squad though, and with Alves thought to be one of the disruptive influences in the squad, there is room to manoeuvre.
Fellow shot stopper Matt Ryan has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Brighton, but that still leaves local lad and fan favourite Jaume Domenech. Domenech was hugely impressive during his spell as first choice in 2015/16 but fell behind Alves in the pecking order upon his return from a serious knee injury.
Now, it seems that he could return to be first choice with Domenech ready to step up in the absence of Alves should he look elsewhere.
