Spanish Papers: Punishment for Barca’s Griezmann contact

Our Spanish Papers review looks at Barcelona’s contact with Antoine Griezmann, which is being reported to FIFA by Atletico Madrid.

Atleti are said to be angered by comments made from Barca director Guillerme Amor, who claimed a meeting had taken place over the transfer of Griezmann to the Camp Nou.

“If Bartomeu met with Griezmann’s family as the newspapers say, then there may well have been an approach,” he said. “Though, I do not know anything for sure.

“There is a good relationship, there can also be comfortable conversations. Rumours are inevitable in the football world. In Griezmann’s case, there are many people we talk to, it is our obligation to have contact with players.”

Los Rojiblancos are now said to be preparing contact with football’s governing body over the comments made.

The French forward is expected to leave Atleti next summer and join one of European football’s top spending clubs, but his rejection to move to Manchester United last summer has now seen them move their interest elsewhere.

Accompanying the English side’s lack of hope in signing the former Real Sociedad is Barca’s interest, which is developing at a rapid pace, prompting reports that a meeting over the move has already taken place.

And, it is now understood that the Catalan club are the only team having made official interest in the France international.

The said meeting which took place last week is said to have opened negotiations with Barca looking to sell a number of players before submitting a transfer bid.

Arda Turan, Andre Gomes and Javier Mascherano are all expected to leave – either in January or next summer, allowing Barca to recoup funds for a move for Griezmann and free up their wage bill.

Aside to their interest in Griezmann, Barca have also shown interest in Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, but it is unlikely a move for both could happen unless further funds are made available.
